Profile
Yoshimori Tomioka (冨岡理森). Contemporary artist. Born in 1999 in Kanagawa, Japan. Based in Tokyo, Tomioka makes work in painting, photography and writing.
Practice
Active as a painter since 2020. Under the theme of “Human and Machine,” Tomioka makes pen drawings using fineliner pens and gold. Questions of neurodiversity, social adaptation, and the structure of self and memory are deepened step by step across the series. The moiré patterns produced by the accumulation of countless lines, and the way gold changes its expression with the light, do not merely supplement the theme visually; they function as the material implementation of the work’s thought itself.
Active as a photographer since 2022. Under the theme of “Continuity,” Tomioka shoots with a film camera and a smartphone. Through the dynamic states of matter, sections of spacetime and the artifacts of the city, the work explores the continuous order latent in the world. From 2026 the photographs are made in monochrome, removing hue and composing the picture from light, dark and form alone.
Writing intermittently since 2024: the short story “Memories of a Machine,” the treatise “An Existential Reconstruction of the Self Based on the Free Energy Principle,” and the philosophical essay “Living the Boundary,” which integrates the two.
